The Garden of Forking Paths: An Alternative Way toGarden Experience |
TANG Keyang |
Abstract: |
The analysis of Jorge Borges' The Garden of Forking
Paths offers an alternative way to explore the potentials of Chinese
garden that goes beyond its literary value. The forking path is
not an accident. Instead the ongoing misunderstanding of garden
legacy may well fit its supposed function as a generating site of
semantics, revealing the essential difference between design and
design research. A real garden also has its "forking paths", which
can be created out of its internal unevenness or via its evolution in
time. A garden can be taken as a world of its entirety or fragments,
depending on how it is organized and interpreted. The diverse
garden experience can be confusing and misleading. However,
roads diverge and converge. "Forking paths" inevitably lead to
meeting points, sustaining the meaning of a garden to its following
generations. |
