"Landscape on Brink": Research on Indian Cliff Dwellings in US National Parks |

Abstract: |
The southwest region of the United States is the most densely distributed area of national parks and monuments because of its rich Indian heritage. The most representative landscape elements—Indian cliff dwellings, constructed on the cliff wall with limited resources, were the miracle of human civilization created by the native American people under the pressure of extinction. While the scenes of numerous American Indian cities and villages were almost completely erased in the history, the cliff dwellings, remaining in the folds of the land in the southwestern United States are preserved as a special type of fossil landscape of human civilization. By analyzing the spatial elements and historical formation of cliff dwellings, this paper reveals that the study of the "fossil" heritage samples of this landscape has implications and significance beyond regions, races and countries. |
